Nov 14th, 2012 by M. Miller
Zondervan’s Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series, named the top commentary series of 2011 by Preaching Magazine, continues to charge ahead!
This month alone, three new volumes have become available.

by Gary S. Shogren

by Eckhard Schnabel
At 1,168 pages Schnabel’s contribution to the ZECNT series is massive and certainly qualifies as a “flagship” volume. Recently appointed Mary French Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament Studies at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Schnabel is an expert not only in New Testament but in the history of of the apostolic period (ca. 33-95 A.D.).
Particularly, Schnabel specializes in the history of mission in earliest Christianity and in the last decade published a pair of studies on this subject including Paul the Missionary: Realities, Strategies, and Methods (IVP Academic: 2008), and Early Christian Mission: Jesus and the Twelve (IVP Academic: 2004).
But now, in Acts, Schnabel focuses his full attention on the second half of Luke’s epic story of Jesus and the church he called into being. All of the perennial features of the ZECNT remain (read my review of the series) in place but to them is now added Schnabel’s expert scholarship and sound exposition of the text.
Preaching or teaching through Acts is a daunting task–a reality only reinforced by the length of this commentary. However, the information in this commentary will only make navigating Acts easier; Schnabel charts a clear course through the many twists and turns of this unique New Testament document.
